The Green Armada

From all walks of the Sport of Sailing (The Green Armada) brought together to battle it out with the best in the world of Sailing

With a rich maritime history, Ireland consistently punches above its weight on a world stage, and our sailing is no different. With Olympic medalists, Volvo Ocean Race winners, America’s Cup sailors and offshore sailing coming from the Emerald Isle, there is a long history of sailing success. Through this varied pool of sailing, inspiration and talent is rife, and above all the respect for what it takes to succeed in the sport is widely appreciated.

Strength in depth is key to a great team, from bow to stern Team Ireland have experience from the array of disciplines within sailing, and look to leverage this mix of skill and talent in order to succeed when the starting gun goes. Drawing on a pool of talent from North and South of the Island of Ireland, the Irish Team is hungry to get racing the SSL Gold Cup.

The captain

Nicholas O’Leary

Nicholas O’Leary has been at the forefront of Irish sailing from the very start of his sailing career. Representing Ireland in World Championships from the age of 11 in the Optimist class, two Youth Worlds in the Laser, Imoca 60 racing to Superyacht helmsman he’s covered a very broad spectrum of boat within the Sport. O’Leary is no stranger to the team dynamics required to make boats go fast and successfully around the race track. Competitiveness runs through O’Leary’s blood as his family have a history of high calibre sports achievements from Olympic pedigree to National Rugby representation on both sides.

“The challenge of bringing together the best sailors in the country and moulding the skill set of dinghy, keelboat and ocean racers together to race the world’s highest calibre of sailors is what excites me in this role”
